Juan Santamaría International Airport consolidates its position as the best in Central America and the Caribbean.

  • It was awarded in this way at the Skytrax World Airport Awards 2023, which recognize the most outstanding air terminals globally.
  • Costa Rica’s main air terminal was also recognized as Best Airport Staff in Central America & Caribbean and The Cleanest Airport in Central America & Caribbean.

March, 2023. Juan Santamaría International Airport (AIJS) was selected for the second consecutive year as the best in Central America and the Caribbean in the Skytrax World Airport Awards 2023.

Categorized as the ‘Oscars’ of the airport industry by recognizing the world’s leading terminals, the winners of this edition were officially announced on March 15 in Amsterdam.

“This recognition is the result of the commitment of AERIS and AIJS as the gateway to pure life experiences, to improve the passenger experience, through a manager that goes beyond the management contract concerned and an airport that wants not only to be at the level, but even exceed, the standards of the region,” explained Ricardo Hernandez, General Director of AERIS Holding Costa Rica.

AIJS also received, as in 2022, the award for The Cleanest Airport in Central America & Caribbean, as well as the Best Airport Staff in Central America & Caribbean.

The latter highlights the airport in the region whose customer service in areas such as attitude, friendliness and efficiency is outstanding. Employees in positions such as information desks, security personnel, stores, and food and beverage establishments are the recipients of this honor.

The weight of these awards lies in the fact that passengers from all over the world (from approximately 550 airports) participate in a customer satisfaction survey to decide the winners.

In the case of this edition, the questionnaire was completed by passengers of more than 100 nationalities between August 2022 and February 2023, on topics such as:

  • Airport entry and exit, ease of access.
  • Variety, efficiency and prices of public transportation
  • Play areas and amenities for children
  • WiFi services
  • Comfort, ambience and design of the terminals
  • Cleanliness, flooring, seating and public areas of terminals
  • Terminal seating
  • Immigration service: system and waiting time
  • Immigration service: staff attitude
  • Friendliness of airport staff
  • Perception of security standards

“We take these awards also as a reaffirmation that working articulately and together is key, which is a philosophy we share with our parent company CCR Group. Both through a staff that does an extraordinary job to provide a service under the highest quality standards, as well as the commitment of all those who are part of the airport community, public and private sector,” added Hernandez.

The World Airport Awards began in 1999, when Skytrax launched its first worldwide airport customer satisfaction survey, and more than 20 years later, they are considered a benchmark of quality for the airport industry.
